Salmonella poses a hazard to both human and pet health commonly found in raw pet food.

Signs of Salmonella in pets may include some, none, or all of the following:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
  • Fever
  • No appetite
  • Lethargy and/or decreased activity level

Since Salmonella can also cause illness or death in people, it is crucial that pet owners are aware that infected pets can shed the bacteria in their feces and saliva without showing signs of being sick, further contaminating the home, yard, and environment. Cross contamination from pet food to people food commonly occurs in the kitchen. If a person becomes sick with Samonella, they can even die. People infected with Salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps–and they can have these symptoms from handling raw pet food, even if their pets do not appear to be sick.
