Vitamin D is fat-soluble. This means it stays in fat and liver and can accumulate into poisonous levels. Unlike water -soluble vitamins, it is is not urinated out of the body by the kidneys. Since it cannot be easily removed, then it can become poisonous if too much is put into the pet food. Correct Vitamin D levels are necessary for calcium and phosphorus to remain in balance with each other inside the body. Too much Vitamin D can harm the kidneys, causing irreversible damage, kidney failure, and sometimes very quickly cause death.

Signs of vitamin D poisoning include any or all of the following:

  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • drooling
  • vomiting
  • weight loss
  • increased drinking of water
  • increased urination
