Description

Human health concern of Shiga Toxin Producing E. coli 0128 (.) in humans. This means the bacteria produces a poison (toxin) that is not destroyed by cooking (or rendering, in the case of pet food). The GI symptoms are usually stomach cramps, mild fever, vomiting, and diarrhea (often bloody), although in some cases, especially children, the kidneys can also be affected. This can develop into a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which can permanently damage or shut down the kidneys completely. This results in death. Although pets do not appear to become sick from  E. coli O128, they can become carriers and shed the bacteria in the house and yard. Pet food is contaminated with  E. coli can easily transfer to human food utensils in the kitchen and then contaminate human food.
